Due to the presence of flavonoids, St. John's wort has a spasmolytic (relaxing) effect on the smooth muscles of the digestive tract, bile ducts, blood vessels, and to a small extent on the muscles of the urinary tract. The essential oil and tannins have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and disinfecting .

This raw material can be used in liver inflammation and various digestive tract diseases as an antispasmodic agent .

Hypericin and fluoroglucinin derivatives inhibit the MAO enzyme (monoamine oxidase), which breaks down serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine . These substances belong to neurotransmitters , the proper level of which determines the proper functioning of the nervous system. It is also speculated that hypericin and fluoroglucinin derivatives may inhibit the reuptake of the above-mentioned neurotransmitters. Thanks to these properties, St. John's wort is considered a plant that is successfully used in the treatment of mild to moderate depression .
